The Client Brief
This was an interesting project for the Kneebone Trees team, we were called to our clients property as a beech tree had fallen and caused a considerable amount of damage and flattened a caravan.
During some previous routine maintenance at the property in Totnes, our team had noticed a diseased tree on the land. A mature beech tree had developed fungal growth and we suggested to our client that a tree survey be done.
A tree survey should be part of regular maintenance, to assess the current condition of your trees and determine whether any issues are present. Due to the visible growth of fungus on this beech tree it was clear that a tree survey had not been done in some time.
Fast forward six months after our initial warning and the tree had completely collapsed. It had been completely uprooted by the harsh weather conditions the region has been experiencing, causing damage to the land around it and completely crushing the caravan which was next to it.
Our team was called back to deliver emergency tree removal and site clearance, to handle the debris caused by this fallen Beech tree.
The Challenges Of Removing A Beech Tree
The main challenge of this Beech tree project was the complete uprooting of the tree, which had a domino effect on the rest of the landscape.
The fungus we had noticed six months prior had led to the weakening of the tree, leading to structural instability. This meant the tree could not withstand the harsh weather conditions the region had been experiencing lately, leading to its uprooting and falling.
Tree fungal diseases can spread quickly and need to be remedied early to avoid complete collapse of the tree. The uprooting of the tree led to damage across the landscape, as well as a caravan being crushed. Thankfully, no one was hurt during this and the caravan was empty, but this has certainly become an unexpected expense our client could have avoided.
The Importance Of Tree Surveys
Tree surveys are comprehensive assessments of your trees and the surrounding landscapes to determine whether any issues are present. These assessments should be part of routine tree and landscape maintenance, as it can prevent issues.
Tree surveys can help identify the early signs of common diseases and fungi, which is essential for a full recovery. If left to spread and worsen, you can expect to lose your infected trees. Or, in the case of this Beech tree, damage to the property, landscape and even potential injury can also be a symptom of an infected tree.
When diseases are able to spread, the tree becomes weak and unable to withstand conditions as it should. In this project, the Beech tree was fully mature and very large which made it an unstable weight for the infected roots to handle. During the strong winds, which the region had been experiencing, the tree was unstable and collapsed, leading to further damage and potential loss of life.
Any site which has large mature trees should undergo regular tree surveys and inspections. Arborists can identify early signs of damage and infection, allowing a prompt response. This will keep your landscape safe and avoid costly issues, such as this fallen Beech tree in Totnes.
How We Removed The Beech Tree
As you can see from the video, the extent of the damage is vast as the caravan has completely caved in. Luckily, no one was in the caravan at the time and the damage had not reached the road, but our client still had a lot of mess to deal with.
Our team began the process of removing the fallen beech tree by chopping the trunk into smaller parts which can then be recycled and used by our customer. This was a fully matured Beech tree, which meant there was a lot to remove.
The site will also require extensive clearance which is in progress, as the ground has been uprooted and debris is everywhere.
