The Client Brief
For this project, our client was a property owner in the beautiful Torquay dealing with a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). The TPO had been given to a specific oak tree on his property, which made the job more difficult.
A Tree Preservation Order is put in place by local authorities to prohibit the cutting down, topping, lopping, uprooting, wilful damage, or wilful destruction of specific trees without their consent. TPOs are delivered on specific trees, groups of trees, or woodlands in the interest of beauty and heritage for the region. This can make the management of these trees difficult, as there are specific rules that need to be implemented.
At Kneebone Trees, we are certified to manage and treat TPO trees and offer a range of solutions to help our clients successfully navigate this process.
In this project, the TPO specified a full crown reduction. Additional work was also needed to make the tree more attractive and safe. We were asked to perform a crown lift as well as pruning, as the oak tree had over-extended limbs and deadwood which needed to be removed.
The primary reason for this crown reduction work was to decrease the risk of branch failure and to make the tree more aesthetically pleasing for our client.
The Challenges
This project posed several challenges for our team. The first was ensuring the preservation of the oak tree due to its TPO status, which required us to pay particular attention to maintaining the tree’s health and longevity while performing the necessary reduction work, as outlined specifically by local authorities.
Going against this work and causing wilful damage to the tree could cause legal issues, and therefore the project required meticulous care to get right.
The second challenge was carefully reducing the tree crown and overhanging limbs without affecting the property or the driveway underneath.
Lastly, removing the deadwood required a delicate approach to avoid any damage to the healthy portions of the tree.
What We Did
Equipped with the council specifications and a clear understanding of our client’s needs, we systematically approached the project to deliver the best results for our client and their landscape.
Our expert team on the job performed a crown lift to provide a 4m clearance over the driveway. This crown lift ensured that the tree no longer interfered with the client’s movement and routines, creating a clearer pathway for their vehicles.
During this project, we also accomplished a full crown reduction – reducing the oak tree to 1.5m and cutting down the over-extended limbs back to the canopy line for a clearer landscape.
Additionally, we removed all the deadwood without affecting the healthy parts of the tree using our precise tools and skills. Throughout the whole project, our focus was safety both for the landscape and the people on site.
Our team also remained committed to enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the tree and making the site a more attractive space for our clients to provide them with many more years of enjoyment all the while keeping the tree’s natural appearance intact.
The Outcome
Following our work on this crown reduction project, the client gained more natural light into their property, enhancing its overall appeal.
Our team at Kneebone Trees successfully developed an aesthetically pleasing and safer tree for the client. Our work not only made the tree more attractive, but healthier as the removal of deadwood and crown reduction reduces the risk of branch failure.
For this project, we were able to not only meet but exceed our client’s expectations by providing them with a more pleasant and risk-free space. All of this was done while respecting the oak tree’s preservation order and maintaining the natural appeal of the land.
