At Kneebone Trees, we specialise in professional tree pollarding services tailored to the health and aesthetic needs of your trees. Our seasoned arborists carefully remove the upper leaf-bearing branches of your trees to ensure new growth is controlled and directed.
We follow industry best practices and use state-of-the-art equipment to deliver exceptional results every time. Our team conducts a thorough assessment of each tree before starting the pollarding process. We consider factors such as species, age, and overall health to determine the best approach for your landscape.
Safety is our top priority, both for our team and for your property. We take all necessary precautions to minimise disruption during the tree pollarding process and will always leave your environment in a better state than we found it, so you can rest assured you’re in great hands when working with us.
Regular maintenance is key to successful tree pollarding, and our team can help. Our services include follow-up visits to monitor the tree’s growth and make any necessary adjustments. This ongoing care ensures that your trees remain healthy and attractive for years to come.
Tree pollarding is a pruning technique that involves the removal of the upper branches of a tree. This practice encourages the growth of a dense head of foliage and branches. It is typically performed on young trees and repeated at regular intervals throughout the tree’s life, helping to control the size and shape of the tree.
This method has been used for centuries to manage trees in both rural and urban settings. Historically, it was employed to produce fodder for livestock and wood for fuel and crafts. Today, pollarding is more commonly used to maintain the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of trees in residential areas.
Pollarding is also a valuable practice for safety, as it can reduce the risk of falling branches. Pollarding is particularly beneficial for certain tree species, such as willows, poplars, and London planes. These species respond well to the technique, producing vigorous new growth from the cut points.
However, it is essential to understand that not all trees are suitable for pollarding. Our professional arborists will help you determine whether this method is appropriate for your trees and overall landscape, before undertaking any work. We can deliver the best results for your needs every time.

Pollarding is often chosen when you want to preserve a tree but control its growth and footprint. It helps keep trees manageable, prevents interference with structures or utilities, and prolongs the life of the tree by reducing the sail effect (wind load) on large crowns.
We’re proud to be trusted by homeowners and businesses across the UK. Here’s what some of our customers have to say about our tree care services.
We have employed some very good arborists over the years, but Kneebone Trees were truly exceptional from the very first contact. Their whole operation is on a completely different level! (All our trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order and within Dartmoor, so work needed to be approved with formal permissions from the National Park). The communications with Kneebone Trees, from quote to job completion, were brilliant. Jacob’s initial visit to provide a price for our complicated work, was thorough, friendly and really well considered. The written estimate itself was produced swiftly, was detailed and the pricing structure was transparent. During the week-long job, Rory and the onsite team were highly professional, friendly and respectful of our property. They were also hugely reassuring throughout what was a stressful time for us – with vast trees very close to our house. Overall, a very positive experience and we would not hesitate to recommend Jacob, Rory and their expert team.
Kneebone trees were great from start to finish. They were quick to respond with a sensible quote. They dealt with the local authority for permission / TPO'S. The team on the day were very professional and left everything tidy and just as we asked. Very happy to recommend and will use them again in the future. Gerry and Donna Kass.
Absolutely Brilliant. Had a large tree removed and the process was smooth and professional. All mess cleaned up and I couldn’t recommend the team more.
The pre-job communication from the company was excellent. The 2 operatives?! Chaps....arrived before time, smartly dressed and nicely spoken. They listened to my requests for care in certain areas. The job was completed efficiently and quickly, I am very pleased with the end result. The area was cleaned up and swept. There were no telephone or cigarette breaks...just hard work for the duration.Although not the cheapest quite I got prior to the job, I am very happy to recommend this company to others.
Excellent job from start to finish. Started with a site survey and discussed exactly what we wanted. A full quote with a description was sent for approval. Once approved date was set. Team arrived, set up and started by 9am. All the work was completed to an excellent standard and the whole area was left clean and tidy.Big thank you to the team and Kneebone Trees
